#2 ECOSTIX:

RECYCLED PLASTIC CHOPSTICKS

#3 MAKITA BabyPure Steam Steriliser

This design is not just about creating a sustainable product, but also about raising awareness. It's about encouraging the South African youth to be more conscious of the daily products they use, and to understand that even something as small as a disposable chopstick can have a significant environmental impact.

Creating this product was a very repetitive process that began with what felt like endless experiments. Initially focused on biomaterials and refining the chopstick rest's composition & ingredients.

I then moved to melted #5 PP caps which is polypropylene with a high melting point, so it's often chosen for containers that hold hot liquid. It's gradually becoming more accepted by recyclers.

For my final undergraduate project I was tasked to design and prototype a recharegable battery-powered appliance. Addressing the ongoing loadshedding [energy] crisis in South Africa, my product had to meet several requirements such as incorporating the injection moulding process and human-centred design. Through the design process of the double-diamond framework, Makita BabyPure was realised through iterations of research, ideation, feedback, mockups, feedback, cad, and fabrication.

I sought to design and create a product that targets parents with infants & attempt to alleviate the stresses of parenthood, especially during the endless electricity power cuts in the country.

Inspired by the Lowveld situated in Mpumalanga, South Africa, and the unique Swati culture, NGUNI side table pays a bespoke homage to this under-represented region and people.

Required to utilise any fourth industrial revolution [4IR] technology or tooling and incorporate local materials.

NGUNI's composition is a three-sectioned table-top with a minimal portrayal of the Nguni cowhide in black & white-- as seen on the eSwatini flag. The black areas were created using a laser cutting machine. The MDF and pine [wood] were sourced in Johannesburg, South Africa.

The table's legs are symmetrical brandering [wood] 3 on opposite ends. The strips of timber a symbolic expression of sun rays as Mpumalanga means 'place of the rising sun'.
